Week 3 Reflection - Webspaces

Google Blogger - What is it and how can we as teachers use it to improve Digital Pedagogies in the Secondary Classroom?

Google blogger has many features and functions, such as using the site as a learning journal, adding in pictures, music, videos, and embedding links to sites that back up your blogs information. These features are easy to navigate and use for teachers and students of any level. Additionally, Google blogger displays its blogs in reverse chronological order, which allows the most recent information being shared readily available.

For example, Google blogger can be setup by teachers to be utilised for individual students or a class, teachers can be creative by customising the blog with different themes or designs to differentiate each blog to suit particular learners needs. Furthermore, Google blogger is a great tool for students to express their own learning through adapting knowledge learnt in lessons and showing this either by video, written, pictures, or multimedia.

Teachers using Google blogger can set different settings depending on the reason for the blog. Teachers can set the blog to private and only allow a class to access and utilise the blog or open and allow sharing of the blog space to the wider school, community, or even parents. Furthermore, Google blogger has a comment section which allows students and teachers the opportunity to comment on what has been blogged. Google blogger also offers numerous data for views to the blog, this is a helpful tool for teachers so they are visually seeing the amount of students viewing the blogs and what blog exactly they are viewing the most.

Much the same as all online and digital resources, the legal, safety, and ethical protocols require teachers (and other authors) to monitor and facilitate them. Students at all times must be reminded about appropriate and inappropriate content, the implications that can come from sharing inappropriate content, like photos, videos, or private information about themselves or others. In todays world we have many online tools to assist us in educating young students about online safety. For example, "Your Digital Journey" is an online tool (through Scootle) directed at primary students about online safety. YouTube offer many videos to support being safe online such as Josh Sipp's "Internet Safety Tips for Teens," and TEDx Talks by various people about online safety. Furthermore, students will also need to navigate a vast amount of information available to them and appropriately acknowledge different sources when blogging different information such as images, videos, or information.

My Classroom

Embedding Google blogging into my Industrial Technology and Design classroom would allow my students to collaboratively share and discuss different research resources regarding joints, welding projects, YouTube clips about new design ideas and many more. Students would be able to brainstorm ideas for up coming projects by commenting on peer ideas.

Substitution - Students could use Google Blog to write drafts for assessments or submit homework for classes.

Augmentation - Students and teachers could use Google Blog as a timely feedback or feedforward function by adding in linking tools to written blogs for further information for learning.

Modification - Students can use Google Blog for sharing and communicating information through healthy and safe discussions. Students can also peer edit and comment on their peers class work.

Redefinition - Google Blog can be used to connect students with experts in different fields to collaborate and create lessons, digital portfolios, or actively participate in global awareness of different issues.

    Hello Kara,
I was very intrigued to find out that google blogger displays its blogs in reverse order. I also like the fact that you have given an example on how teachers can use google blogging. To improve, maybe you could put your legal, ethical, and safety features of the blog and also talk a lot more about the SAMR model but these are just suggestions. Overall it was a good read but probably requires more information. Hope you enjoy the rest of the Unit and I am excited to see the rest of your blogs!

  2. I agree Kaya, a blog will be very beneficial to students in an industrial technology classroom. Your blog post if very informative and I have not had much time to explore too many other websites, but am going to take a look at Your Digital Journey. Thanks for the suggestion.

  3. Hi Kara,
Great blog post, simple and to the point, it got your view across.
Just next time, add references under your photos; as while I can guess why you have put them there, the exact reason isn't identified. Also, you use 'for example' and 'furthermore' a lot, next time I suggest maybe utilizing dot points or in some cases those words were not needed at all. Also add a reference for the SAMR image. :)
